What Is a DTF Gang Sheet?

A DTF (Direct-to-Film) gang sheet is a single print sheet that holds multiple designs arranged together. Instead of printing each design separately, you pack them onto one sheet to maximize material and reduce cost. JakThread's Gang Sheet Builder makes this easy — even if it's your first time.

Step 1: Prepare Your Files

Getting your files right before you upload is the most important step. Poor file quality is the #1 cause of blurry or faded prints.

  • Resolution: Use 300 DPI minimum. Anything lower will print blurry.
  • File format: Save as PNG with a transparent background. JPEGs have white backgrounds that will print as white on your transfer.
  • Size: Set your design to the exact size you want it to print — DTF transfers print true to size.
  • Colors: Use RGB color mode for the most accurate color output.

Pro tip: If you're working in Canva, export as PNG with "transparent background" checked. In Photoshop or Illustrator, flatten to PNG at 300 DPI.

Step 2: Build Your Gang Sheet

Step 3: Cut Your Transfers

When your gang sheet arrives, cut out each design with scissors or a craft knife. Cut close to the edge of the design — leaving a thin border is fine, but avoid cutting into the print itself.

Step 4: Heat Press Your DTF Transfer

This is where the magic happens. Follow these settings for best results:

  • Temperature: 300°F (149°C)
  • Time: 10 seconds
  • Peel: Instant (hot peel) — peel the film immediately after pressing
  • Cover sheet: Always use a Teflon cover sheet between the transfer and your heat platen to protect the print
  • Pressure: Medium-firm pressure

Step-by-step pressing:

  1. Pre-press your garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  2. Place your DTF transfer face down on the garment in the desired position.
  3. Lay your Teflon cover sheet on top.
  4. Press at 300°F for 10 seconds.
  5. Open the press and immediately peel the film while it's still hot.
  6. Optional: Do a short re-press (5 seconds) with the cover sheet for extra durability.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Low-resolution files — always use 300 DPI or higher
  • ❌ JPEG files with white backgrounds — use PNG with transparency
  • ❌ Skipping the Teflon sheet — this protects your print and your platen
  • ❌ Cold peeling — DTF transfers are hot peel; waiting too long causes lifting
  • ❌ Too little pressure — firm, even pressure ensures full adhesion
